PRICING

Here, we should start by pointing out that there is a difference between how to calculate the pricing for Lumber vs Live Edge Wood Slabs.  While your typical lumber (at a Lumber or Home Supply Store) is usually sold in one of three ways: by the piece, by the linear inch, or by the square foot dimensions, a Live Edge Hardwood Slab is calculated using a unit of Board foot, which is a measure of the volume of wood and not just the surface area. A single board foot measures one square foot (1ft length x 1ft width) x 1″ thick (rough-cut thickness, not the finish-planed thickness).  It can be calculated this way

1 BOARD FOOT = Length (in) x Width (in) x Thickness (in) ÷ 144

For example, let’s say that we have a Live Edge Slab measuring: Length 10 ft (120 in) x Width 1.5 ft (18 in) x Thickness (2 in).  According to the above formula, the calculations would look something like this:

• (120 in) x (18 in) x (2 in) = 4320 in ÷ 144 = 30 bf

Now that you have the number of board feet in the wood slab, you can use the price per board foot to calculate your cost; meaning that if the wood seller offers the wood at $20/bf, based on the above calculations, your cost would be: 30 bf x $20/bf = $600 for the wood slab.

We sell most of our unfinished Live Edge Wood Slabs at an average price of $20 per board foot, which is considered to be wholesale price by market standards.  Our mission is to encourage people to get interested in woodworking and use their creativity to build masterpieces of art from our inventory of reclaimed Appalachian hardwood ready to be re-purposed and enjoyed for years to come.

Finish Work

The process of sanding/shaping/filling voids/working a slab can drastically change from piece to piece.  Some require a lot of love while others are a piece of cake.  In our experience, finish work often equals the cost of the raw slab itself.  For Example, (Cost of Slab=$200) (Finish Work=$200)

Table Bases

We make a wide variety of table bases/furniture legs.  We can also build one just for you with your own dimensions!  Of course, these too, range in difficulty and cost of materials.  Below is a rough idea of typical costs for a handmade hardwood or Log base.

Coffee Tables/End Tables/Benches:  $150-450+

Sofa/Entry Tables $300-600+

Desks $300-600+

Bar Tops $500-900+

Dining Tables $500-1200+

Rustic Log Legs $150-600 for any table

Specialty Work and Slab Flattening Services

If your project is funky and we are unable to estimate the cost of materials or labor, we charge $80/hr for general shop time.  We also offer flattening and sanding services at $100/hour.  Maximum dimensions for slab flattening are 56in Wide x 15ft Long x 10in Thick.

 Dimensions

Measure your space and figure out what kind of dimensions you're after. For some projects it's good to be flexible since live edge slabs aren't dimensional, they bend, twist, and curve.

Species

Our main species we always have in stock are: Ambrosia maple, black walnut, and rainbow poplar. We do have other species that rotate through but these are the main three.  We typically carry Eastern Red Cedar, Hickory, Sycamore, Cherry, Red Elm, Honey Locust, Beech, Birch, Ash and Burls.  For more information, Click on the'Specie' tab at the top of this page

 Leg Systems/Bases

If your project requires legs, figure out what kind you think would be best. We are able to make rustic log leg systems and also custom bases made from hardwoods.

WE DO NOT PROVIDE METAL LEGS. These can be found either on Amazon, Etsy, or Ebay.  We recommend Flowyline leg systems to most of our customers.

Live Edge River Tables

DSC_0810.JPG

River tables are hard to quote at times. So much depends on the type of slab and how much epoxy is needed. Epoxy runs over $100/gallon and how much is used drastically affects the final cost. Rock inlays are slightly cheaper since they displace the amount of epoxy used. I can give a rough estimate on how much I think it'll cost but for a better quote, I recommend visiting our shop and selecting a slab.
